TELSTRA has confirmed rumours that it will release the Apple iPhone next week for as little as $279 on a $30 plan.

Unlike Optus and Vodafone, which will offer the iPhone outright without a contract, Telstra will only offer the iPhone on 24-month contracts.

The carrier revealed the first official Australian prices for the iPhone, with total minimum prices for the phone and contract ranging from $999 to $2400.

The new 8GB iPhone will be available with Telstra for $279 upfront on a two-year contract at $30 per month, or for free on the carrier's $80 per month plan.

The 16GB model will be available for $399 on a $30 per month contract or included for free with a $100 per month contract.

The company did not release any further information about data charges, only adding that each plan included free Wi-Fi access at Telstra hotspots.

Earlier rumours predicted Telstra would release the iPhone on July 22nd - 11 days after Vodafone and Optus - but all three carriers will release it on July 11th.

Three, the only remaining carrier without the iPhone, launched a campaign last week urging customers to lobby Apple for an iPhone release on the network.

Telstra had been a noticeable hold-out from Apple's iPhone 3G carriers when Apple chief executive officer Steve Jobs announced the phone's specifications and Australian availability on June 10.

The telecommunications carrier is the biggest in Australia, with 9 million mobile phone customers, and rumours emerged that the hold-up was due to Telstra's insistence that Apple add Telstra's own Sensis applications on to the phone.

Telstra's consumer group managing director David Moffatt said the company was "delighted to bring this product to (users) on Telstra's high-speed Next G network".

"With iPhone 3G on the country's largest and fastest 3G network, providing coverage to 99 percent of the population, more Australians will enjoy the iPhone 3G experience in even more places."
