iPhone users from all over the globe have been reporting problems with their 3G reception, enough to make a LOT of alarm bells ring, yet 3g chip maker Infineon and Apple remain silent.

Dropped calls and slow data transfer speeds have been common complaints, with experts pointing to the Infineon 3G chip inside the iPhone as the likely culprit. One of the attractions of the new 3G iPhone is it's fast browsing speed, yet users have reported inconsistent speeds and their iPhone loosing 3G reception completely. This in areas where other 3G handsets receive good signal strength and work fine.

BusinessWeek have called this in as 'faulty software', stating that the problem lies with the Infineon Chip, which it described as 'fairly new and untested in high volumes outside a lab setting'. Infineon have declined to comment, typical of a company that has a manufacturing partnership with Apple.

It's predicted that Apple will be releasing a software update soon to resolve the problem.
