Since the iPhone 4's launch on June 24, 2010, all consumers have been talking about is the potential iPhone 5 and what it would do.
There were grand tales of an iPhone that would have the entire front made up of screen, and no more physical buttons.
Rumor had it that it would have an OS that operated almost exactly like the iMacs, only in the palm of your hand.
Apple has finally announced that it will hold a conference on October 4 to "talk iPhone," and on that day we will see what the Cupertino, CA based company really has in store for us, but until then we can make some pretty educated guesses.
First of all, though not many patents have been leaked into public view, a few that have are worth mentioning. There is a patent leaked about a month ago that outlines a new technology that might help reduce (or totally eliminate) the amount of fingerprints on the screen. Titled "Direct Vaporization for Oleophobic Coatings," the patent design shows off a high tech system that applies a grease resistant coating (to a screen, most likely) and then is placed in a liquid supply system where it is vacuum sealed.
Another hot topic for iPhone 5 speculators is whether or not the newest iPhone will support Telstra's 4G LTE or not. Hugely important to some, and a small detail for others, the answer is not yet clear. However, it's been reported that a few of the top selling Apple stores in the US have recently received AT&T LTE hardware, and AT&T has stated that it will release their first LTE phone at the end of the year, which would coincide with the iPhone 5's purported launch.
What we do know for sure though, is that the body's design will be different yet again. We were made aware of this when rumours sprouted from manufacturers overseas that were responsible for producing the bodies. These companies said that the iPhone will have a smooth, beveled back much like the iPhone 3GS instead of the square feel that the iPhone 4 gave.
They also indicated that the bodies were wider, which could mean a bigger screen. These rumors have recently been confirmed by companies that manufacturer cases, due to images of their products indeed revealing a wider body and a curved back that gives the phone a refined, sleek look.
In conclusion, while we don't know what the iPhone 5 will do for us exactly, we all hope that at least some of these rumors end up making it to the production line, and regardless of what features are included, there will always be a line outside of the Apple stores on launch day by people eager to become the first iPhone 5 owners.
