iPhone 5 Could Have 8 Megapixel Sony Camera Inside

iPhone CameraThe iPhone 5 saga continues, this time with a strong report that the iPhone 5 will contain a Sony digital camera in it's internals when it's released.

CEO of Sony, Howard Stringer, spoke openly about the camera to the Wall Street Journal, mentioning one of their camera's would indeed be used in the iPhone 5.

Stringer joked around regarding the irony of producing technology to support Apple, a major competitor.

“[It] always puzzles me,” he told the WSJ. “Why would I make Apple the best camera?”

Stringer also revealed that this would cause a possible delay to the release of the iPhone 5. Due to the recent earthquakes in Japan, production factories were damaged, halting production of many Sony components, including this camera.

Sony produce a massive array of components for digital devices, often used by other manufacturers. In this instance, the camera is not being specifically designed for use in the Apple iPhone 5, but it will be used.

Omnivision, another producer of micro components, also put in a bid to be the supplier for a 8 Megapixel camera, for the upcoming iPhone 5's internal camera. Reports claim they lost, which further strengthens both this claim by Sony and the rumour that the iPhone 5 will have a 8 Megapixel camera inside.

If the iPhone 5 does indeed have a 8 Megapixel camera inside, it'll be a welcome upgrade from the current 5 Megapixel offering. Whilst camera phone's don't offer the same image clarity that dedicated compact digital camera grant, technology is improving the image quality produced by these tiny internal cameras.

However, it looks like the iPhone 5 won't be released until September, due to the Earthquakes in Japan and other unexpected delays. Only time will tell exactly when the iPhone 5 will arrive.
