Working From The iPhone – Is It Feasible?

Working From The iPhoneGiven how many of us are able to work remotely these days, the Internet has really ushered in an evolution in how the world goes to work.

Sure, the brick-and-mortar, nine-to-five office still dominates, but given the ability of air travel and communications to cut our distances between each other down to nothing, it’s important to remember that the working life doesn’t have to be so traditional.

Especially when you’ve got no other choice but to do work remotely.

Some of us are in such a situation. We need to check email, documents, type out reports, or create new content on computers and deliver it on the Internet. So what if you are constricted without any Internet or gadget usage except that trusty old helpful friend of yours, the iPhone? As you’re about to find out, it might not be such a complicated maneuver to work from your iPhone as you once thought.

Working Remotely from Anywhere

Admittedly, not all of us have the ability to work remotely from anywhere we choose. Some people are attached to their work, quite literally - they can’t perform the work unless they’re there in person. Manufacturing and service jobs come to mind. You aren’t a very good waiter if you try to do all of your work from the iPhone, after all.

But there’s a growing sector of us who don’t have that kind of work plan, and that means greater flexibility. That’s good news for you, especially if you’re the type of person who would be attracted to an article like this.

But the iPhone? The keyboard’s tiny! The connection can go in and out sometimes, and isn’t as reliable as being in the office in a face-to-face meeting anyway. How is one really supposed to take what’s in their head and transmute it to a convenient device so small? As you’re about to see, it’s not really such a tall order.

Business Logistics Using the Web and Smart Phones

If you’re doing work on the iPhone, there’s a good chance that you’ll have to deal with the idea of using a keyboard. Even a handy flip-out keyboard like this one from ThinkGeek isn’t ideal for doing work; it looks more suited for texting.

With that in mind, you’ll have to really get creative if you want to do a lot of typing from your iPhone. An App like the Wide Mail Keyboard might be down your alley if you need to get a lot of words out fast.

Not all of us, of course, are novelists, and so the quality of keyboard isn’t necessarily the biggest factor in whether or not we do our work from the iPhone. Sometimes, it’s a simple matter of logistics - issues like file extensions and e-mail attachments can get in the way of simple communications. But when you’re able to use Google Docs on your smart phone, that changes things a bit, doesn’t it?

It should, because it means you’ll be able to handle, view, and edit all sorts of files from your iPhone - the kinds of things you’re used to using on the office laptop but don’t normally bring with you when you're working on the iPhone. When you’re editing Google Documents online with a smart phone, you’ll feel light years ahead of the person next to you who seems to think that only e-mail-related work can be handled via their little gadget. Don’t be that guy!

When it comes to getting work done, the quality of your work will always rely on you and your attitude. But if you use a trick or two along the way, it can only enhance your flexibility and your value as a a 21st-century employee or entrepreneur.
